Where the hell did this come from?

Why is it so cold? Icebergs floating off our coast!

IcebergLast night when I checked the temperature, it was just below 6 degrees Celsius (Cape Town). The minimum reported temperature for tonight is 3.6 C at 05h07… I’ve been wondering why it is so damn cold this week, until I read this on IOL.co.za: There are 20m high Icebergs floating off our coast!

The sighting has just been reported about 4 hours ago. The article doesn’t say much, except that this has never been observed here before. “This is very unusual and in fact we don’t know of anything in recent history that has being reported this close to South African waters,” said NSRI spokesperson Craig Lambinon.

For those not familiar with African geography, here is a picture of the ocean currents around Africa’s southern tip, along with an indication of where the iceberg was spotted:
Beware! Icebergs!

As you can see, it is located right in the middle of the Agulhas ocean current, which is fed by the warm Mozambique Current. The aghulas current is know for its considerably higher temperature than the Western cold Benguela current, which is also shown on the map. The agulhas current’s average temperature ranges from 14C to as high as 26C.

Here is another picture showing the main ocean currents of the world:
wtf iceberg
Do you see any way an iceberg could have drifted here from the north pole?? My theory is that it came in from the South along current “l“, went up and past Australia’s west coast with “m“, went over and past Madagascar with currents “n” and “o” (and not melting completely along the way), and is currently at “p“.

How the hell did an iceberg get to our Eastern Coast? How gigantic did it have to be to begin with for it not to melt in the warm ocean currents along the way? Crazy.

Joke of the month: “Prince” sues thepiratebay.org

Prince Beware!
It has been attempted many times before, and always failed. Filing a lawsuit against thepiratebay is like giving a pig more mud to play in. Just visit thepiratebay’s “legal” section, with a list of letters and take-down notices from various firms, and thepiratebay’s replies. Makes for a good, fun read.

When I read the article, “Prince lashes out at YouTube, eBay and The Pirate Bay”, on news.com, one name stood out in particular:

“The rock star has hired Web Sheriff, a British-based company that specializes in hunting down pirated content on the Web, to launch a legal campaign against companies that wrongfully profit from the artist’s work, according to John Giacobbi, Web Sheriff’s president.”

Ah yes, that’s right, Web Sherriff, has had some dealings with thepiratebay before…

Web Sherrif first contacted thepiratebay.org on May 25, 2005 with this letter on behalf of The White Stripes:
http://static.thepiratebay.org/whitestripes_mail.txt

“STRICTLY PRIVATE & CONFIDENTIAL
ATTENTION ADDRESSEES ONLY
Dear Frederik,”

“Whilst writing, we would further caution you against communicating or otherwise posting any remarks that could be construed as being defamatory of our clients (or Web Sheriff) or that could otherwise be injurious to our clients’ (or our) genuine business interests. Similarly, we would inform you that the copyright in the Notification and, indeed, this e-mail is vested in Web Sheriff and that, in the event that you attempt to publish either the Notification or this e-mail on your web-site (or elsewhere), appropriate action shall be taken for infringement of our copyright (we trust, in this regard, that you will concur that Sweden does recognise copyright). “

thepiratebay.org’s reply: http://static.thepiratebay.org/whitestripes_response.txt

“We would like to refer you to our Legal Threats section, on which we,while having much fun, idicule people like you. Thank you for your contribution.”

“We look forward to receiving more of your so exquisitely designed HTML e-mails with the shiny wanna-be-police-star.”

“I wanna be a cool WEB SHERIFF when I grow up. Do I get a shiny star and a six-shooter?”

You can read the second email and response here.
An invoice from thepiratebay to Web Sherriff: here
3rd email from Web Sherriff here with attached photo of Neij.
Some random image as response: here
4th and final mail: here
And thepiratebay’s response: here.

“Dear John (no, not Wayne),
before attempting to threathen us in Swedish, either hire a real
translator (instead of Babelfish), or at least take a Swedish course. I
can highly recommend http://www.slayradio.org/mastering_swedish.php,
which will teach you the finer nuances of the Swedish language.

thepiratebay has been threatened by the likes of Microsoft, Dreamworks, Warner Brothers, and apple. Yet all they have accomplished is summarized in a single line on thepiratebay’s website:

“No action (except ridiculing the senders) has been taken by us because of these. :-)

I can only imagine the expression on the Web Sherriff staff’s faces when “Prince” told them “Hi dolls, please sue those piratebay ickypoo’s for me, fanks!”

Strangest Commercial I Have Ever Seen

Hooray, lesbian action! This must be the strangest commercial that I have ever seen…. Apparently the commercial is for a new flavour of slushies for the convenience store Mac’s. The flavour called WTF stands for “Whats the flavour”…

Shell hosting

UPDATE: projektnode.net just suddenly went offline without warning. They’ve been down for almost a week…

OLD ARTICLE:
Since supybot requires only python and further only minimal resources and a single background process, I was looking for a cheap shell provider that only offered the basics. So I signed up with NerdyTechs @ $1.25/mo and Projektnode @ $1.50/mo.

Unfortunately, I have to say that NerdyTechs sucks. I signed up on the 1st of June, however, after signing up I found out that their data center was offline (without mention on their website). I was told that they were moving their servers and that everything would be ready within a week, yet 2 weeks later I haven’t even received my login details. I guess you get what you pay for, luckily $1.25 is not a major loss…

Before signing up with projektnode, I visited their support chatroom on their IRC server. The admin was friendly and helpful, and I received my login details within 5 minutes of signing up. I downloaded supybot, configured it, and had a fully operation bot, without any glitches or annoyances whatsoever. The projektnode shell account also includes basic webhosting. Well worth $1.50 / month.
This is projektnode’s uptime: 01:50:11 up 116 days, 22:20, 2 users, load average: 0.13, 0.07, 0.01
